Serpetine or soapstone, from which these statues and birdbaths are made, are soft types of stone that occur in different colors, mainly in central Africa. Nicely shiny, in various colors, but usually dark gray.

These chunks of stone are worked for many hours with various tools, then sanded and polished until they have the right size, shape and shine.
