Serpentine or soapstone from which these statues are made are soft types of stone that occur in different colors, mainly in central Africa. Nicely shiny, in various colors, but usually dark gray.

These chunks of stone are worked for many hours with various tools, then sanded and polished until they have the right size, shape and shine.
