Mother of pearl is an organic shell material usually found on the inside of many types of large shells. The thickness of the mother-of-pearl is different for each type of shell.
The nacre is produced by the shellfish via epithelial cells. The mother of pearl is produced in order to provide a smooth surface for the shellfish and to ward off parasites.
When a shellfish suffers from a parasite for longer, it will constantly produce nacre, which can eventually form a pearl.
